Relocating with a dog? Here’s a list of tips to keep you on your toes.
Get your dog a microchip implant
That is if you haven’t already. Moving out happens to be quite stressful and losing things is almost always part of the whole thing. With this said, it is important that you ensure your dog is not one of the things you unfortunately lose. This is why a microchip implant is something your dog needs. And you, too, for peace of mind. In the case of relocating to a new house, should you lose your dog on the way to your new home, a fun and exciting reunion is definitely on the horizon if your dog has a microchip with them. These chips are not cumbersome at all so your pet won’t even feel its presence.
Consult with your vet
The best time to move is when your pet is at its best physical form. You probably already know that dogs are quite attuned to their owner’s temperament. Given how moving to a new place is as stressful as they get, it is in your best interest to first ascertain if your pet is ready for all of this looming stress. Another crucial thing is your dog’s vaccinations. Are they all on schedule? What you do not want to happen is for your new home to be welcomed by a sick pup.
Make sure your dog has been adequately trained to face new situations
If you think it’s difficult for you to find yourself in a new environment, with new neighbors, consider how your dog might feel. The prospect of being in a strange home could prove stressful to your dog. Therefore it is best that you give them ample preparation by way of taking them to new parks and whatnot prior to your big move.
Find a reliable crate
Many dog owners happen to be crate haters. If you are one of them, it is about time to teach yourself to appreciate crate’s practical purpose. This is especially true if you are about to move out and into a new residence. How else are you going to transport your pup safely?
Conjure up a complete list
Packing is difficult. Packing sans the help of a list, even more so. So make sure you do write up a list that is comprehensive. And this means listing not only your belongings. You must list down your dog’s belongings as well. After all, this is something they cannot do on their own. There are many problems that could arise if you do not follow a list while packing your things. The most obvious; forgotten and neglected stuff. Surely you do not want your dog’s medication and food and other essentials left out cold in your old house.
Ensure that your new neighborhood is dog-friendly
This is perhaps the most important item on this list. The worst that can happen when moving to a new place is finding out that your beloved pup is not welcomed by both your new landlord and neighbors. So before you choose a new house or apartment to relocate to, make sure that this basic consideration has been taken care of.
