Tia Torres, the director of the Villalobos Rescue Center in New Orleans, has witnessed numerous dogs in poor health. However, one case seemed like the worst one she had ever witnessed.

Tia saved this dog. It had been shot and was abandoned in a swamp.

A concerned citizen brought a dying pit bull to Tia’s residence. This dog was promptly brought to a veterinary clinic, where he had surgery. The animal was named Curtis and he was covered in maggots and had a gaping bullet wound on the back of its skull. The veterinarians were able to successfully treat Curtis’ gunshot wound and save his life.

The events of that day left Tia stunned, and maybe even traumatized. She could not believe someone would intentionally shoot a dog. She could only call the person that did this a monster.

Curtis needed to rehabilitate and recuperate in the clinic for several weeks. When Tia returned to meet him, Curtis was able to walk with a cast on his foot. She also observed his friendliness and gentleness. The thought that such a sweet dog had been shot distressed her even further.

Tia had to collect Curtis from the clinic in order to prepare him for adoption. While conversing with one of the vets, Amiee, she was informed of good news. The veterinarian had chosen to adopt Curtis.

Tia was surprised but very pleased. She was aware that Amiee was captivated with Curtis and that this was the next obvious step for her. In fact, Amiee’s six-year-old son developed an attachment to him. Adopting him ensured them that her son would have Curtis’s company for a long time.

Curtis’s story did not begin particularly well. He was right on the verge of giving up and passing away. However, his story did not have to be tragic and it was all thanks to the right people who came to help him.
