True friendship means that you never leave a friend behind. Dogs know loyalty more than any other creature. When they bond with a human or another dog, you should expect that the bond will last a lifetime. This is why dogs are considered to be man’s best friend.
A great story about a dog’s loyalty is about a pit bull named Merrill. Merrill is a rescue dog who lived in the Rocket Dog Rescue shelter in San Francisco. When Merrill was first brought into the rescue, she was accompanied by a Chihuahua named Taco. They were friends and would cry and get anxious whenever they get separated.
The volunteers are Rocket Dog Rescue aims to rescue dogs from overcrowded kill shelters. They provide shelter for the dogs and work very hard to find forever homes for all of the dogs living in their rescue shelter. Merrill and Taco are two of the many dogs looking for a home. However, the shelter volunteers didn’t know how deep the bond between Merrill and Taco was until one day when Merrill needed to get surgery.
Merrill had an infection in his urinary tract that required surgery to save her life. Taco became restless and anxious the entire time Merrill was in operation. After the surgery, the volunteers figured that Merrill should be alone for her wounds to heal faster.
However, Merrill and Taco wouldn’t stop crying for each other. The volunteers eventually decided to put the two dogs together in the recovery room. Taco was very attentive and took care of his best friend during the recovery. Taco stayed by Merrill’s side the entire time, comforting her and making sure she’s okay. The staff and volunteers were amazed by how much the two dogs loved each other. However, they were also worried about their future.
Bonded dogs are harder to adopt because most people are unable to adopt two dogs at once. It’s too much of a responsibility. So, the shelter volunteers decided to list both dogs separately, hoping that someone would come in to adopt one of the two dogs.
One day, a man came into the shelter to look for a dog to adopt. He found Merrill and instantly fell in love with the adorable pit bull. The man had the paperwork organized, and he was ready to go home with the newest member of his family, Merrill.
The only problem was that Merrill refused to leave when it was time to go. Merrill kept howling when the man tried to lead her away from her kennel, where Taco was also staying. The man was clearly confused and soon got an explanation from the shelter volunteers about Merrill and Taco being best friends and had a strong bond.
The man understood that Merrill and Taco should be kept together. Unfortunately, the man can’t adopt two dogs at once and eventually decided to take another dog. So, the shelter decided to change its strategy and listed both dogs as bonded pairs. They knew that it would be more difficult to find forever homes for them, but they didn’t give up. A woman heard about the two dogs and volunteered to foster Merrill and Taco until they find a family willing to adopt both dogs.
It didn’t take long for someone to call in expressing their interest in adopting Merrill and Taco. A family from San Jose stumbled into the shelter’s website and read Merrill and Taco’s story. They fell in love with the story as well as the two dogs. After learning about Merrill and Taco, the family decided to adopt the two dogs. The family drove to the foster mom’s house, and after seeing the two dogs, they knew that Merrill and Taco were going to be a part of their family.
However, the family soon discovered that Taco had a heart problem, and fluid was building up in his lungs. Taco was placed on special medications, and because of his age, there was a chance that Taco wouldn’t be able to recover. Merrill stayed with Taco the entire time, comforting him while he was sick.
Soon enough, the family found that Taco started getting better. He was no longer at risk of heart failure, and he became very active. Merrill and Taco healed each other during their times of need.
