Rescuing stray dogs can be quite challenging because they are often skittish, especially if the stray pupper experienced a traumatizing event. Animal rescuers need to be extremely patient if they want to save these doggos. That’s why people like Aja-Nikiya Estro should be applauded because they never give up on them.

Last January, Estro and her colleagues were called to Louisiana to help a dog that was stranded on an island. Locals told them that a huge tide during Hurricane Laura pushed the doggo to that small plot of land, and she had been trapped there ever since.

Estro is the founder of Compassion Kind, which is an animal rescue group based in Florida. And even if they lived hundreds of miles away, they were more than willing to make the journey just to rescue this pupper and other animals that were affected by the hurricane.

Estro and her colleagues went to the island on a small boat. When they got there, she immediately realized that this island was uninhabitable, making her very worried about the pooch. They wanted to get the doggo out of there, but the pupper kept on running away from them.

Even when Estro set up a trap cage with some dog food, the pooch was very evasive. So, Estro decided to try to earn this pup’s trust. She just sat on the ground with a small bag of kibble, and she asked her colleagues to leave her. Estro patiently waited, and after a while, the pooch started trusting her. She then named the pup Marsha. When Estro saw an opportunity, she grabbed Marsha and carried her back to the boat.

She just hugged the scared pooch the entire boat ride. They wanted to make Marsha understand that she’s safe now. Estro even slept on the floor with the doggo at the local animal shelter. After a couple of weeks, Marsha came out of her shell, and she started playing with the other dogs at the shelter like a normal pooch. Marsha is now ready for adoption, and we hope she finds her forever home soon!
