Dogs have been man’s best friend for over thousands of years. We have developed them to be one of our best animal companions. But for some people that have particular problems with their physical, mental and neurological functions, a group of dogs that are called service dogs really help them in their daily lives. These dogs are usually allowed to be inside places where normal pets are not allowed to enter. Some of these service dogs don’t necessarily only assist those persons with disabilities, some are there to help alert their master with diabetes or brain seizures.
Here are some of the different types of service dogs that greatly help people that are in need.
1. Guide Dogs
These types of dogs are one of the most common service dogs that help persons with disabilities like especially those that are deaf. Guide dogs are of great help especially to blind people when they are going to different places or just doing different daily activities. The most common dog breeds to be used as guide dogs are Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and different mixed breeds, sometimes smaller types of breeds such as poodles can also be used as service dogs.
Guide dogs have been assisting so many blind people for a very long time now, some records of this can be dated back centuries ago in the times of Romans. There have been a lot of laws that have been approved by different governments that have been written to make guide dogs more legal. Guide dogs are actually not required to have vests on their bodies, but some of the assistant dogs are often wearing a special type of harness to make it easier for their blind owners to handle them.
2. Hearing Dogs
These types of service dogs usually assist deaf people in their daily activities. These hearing dogs help their deaf owner by alerting them to important noises like doorbells, car honks and different alarm, if the hearing dog notices these types of sounds, they would immediately touch their master to let them be aware where the noise is coming from.
Golden Retrievers and Labradors are also very common dog breeds that are used as hearing dogs, although there can be different breeds suitable for this type of service. These types of breeds include poodles and cocker spaniels. Other small breeds of dogs that are from animal shelters have been successfully trained to become hearing dogs, these include Shih Tzus, and even Chichuahuas.
3. Mobility Assistance Dogs
Assistance dogs that perform various tasks for people with varying disabilities are called mobility assistance dogs. These types of dogs usually help their masters by bringing different objects they need, push buttons for automatic doors, and even assist their masters when they are on their wheelchairs. These types of dogs help people with different injuries when they are still recovering. There can be different types of breeds that can be used for mobility assistance, it depends on the human on what type of breed is most suitable for their needs.
